When Stanley Kubrick made a movie, there was always an underlying message in it. The Shinning or Eyes Wide Shut are the subjects of discussion that captivate ideas of conspiracy theory, truth, and somewhere in between. In 1964’s Dr. Strangelove, Fluoride in drinking water was one of those theories that turn out to be partly fact-partly fiction Fluoride Conspiracy Theory? In the 1950s & until today, conspiracy theorists claimed that fluoridation was a plot by the Government, to slowly poison the Drinking Water that Americans consumed. The Government claimed Fluoride was beneficial to Dental health while other scientists claim it slowly damages parts of the brain & body. Just how true, we still don’t know. One of my favorite Kubrick movies is Dr. Strangelove, where Peter Sellers plays many parts: the mad scientist, the president, and a British Air Force captain. One of the key plotlines in the movie is the scene when General Jack D. Ripper played by Sterling Hayden has gone mad and deployed his B-52 nuclear bombers to Russia because of what he believes is a communist infiltration plot against American society. Fluoride in Drinking Water Before he commits suicide, he makes his case in point to the British Officer (played by Peter Sellers) that fluoridation in drinking water was a “commie” plot, a conspiracy that people were being slowly poisoned by drinking water and other products that were introduced by the powers that be after World War 2. Today, the debate continues. Both sides have different opinions. Some scientists may have found proof from detailed research recently that links fluoridation with hypothyroidism among other adverse health conditions, especially in children. And human epidemiological studies have identified possible links to learning, memory, and cognition deficits, though most of these studies have focused on populations with fluoride exposures higher than those typically provided by U.S. water supplies” “According to the American Dental Association, the effects of Fluoride have been studied for more than 65 years and is conclusive in that the use of fluoride has been rigorously tested as a public health measure and is considered one of the most successful medical measures of the last 100 years. ” Blog published on May 22, 2013 There is no-valid scientific proof to support people’s claims that fluoride causes medical problems like heart disease. They went on to say “As always The Dose makes the poison” History of Sodium Fluoride In 1945 Grand Rapids Michigan became the first place in the world for fluoride to be added to its drinking water supply. 53 years later the US Public Health System lowered its recommended levels for drinking water. Growing evidence in recent years has changed some thinking that maybe consumer products that promote dental health may pose the potential risk of serious health problems that seem more and more apparent. Earlier the same year, scientists linked high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in the drinking water of school children in Michigan to low levels of tooth decay. That led to adding it to Grand Rapids tap water which grew to other communities' water systems and eventually, all over the country and the world to where it is today. The process became admired and marveled at as one of the greatest medical achievements of the 20th century. The studies in the following years showed some overall progress in the fight against tooth decay but never took into account that fluoride was being added to dental products like toothpaste and mouthwash. This might explain other states without fluoridated water in the country that also showed improvements in cavities and dental disease. By this time fluoride was being added to drinking water supplies all over the world. Environmental Health Professionals were questioning the application to drinking water, dosing rate, and risks to human health. They wanted more studies on the use by babies whose formulas were mixed with tap water but as we know the process never stopped. It was strongly defended and advocated by the government What Is Fluoride Made Of Fluorides are a natural element found in water and the earth that are used in the production of aluminum and other industrial products. In the mid-1940 the Aluminum industry was booming with a lot of fluorides left over as a by-product and this is where some conspiracy enters the story. Apparently, there were some questionable studies done by questionable researchers who worked for some pretty big questionable companies like ALCOA Aluminum and Dupont and The Dental Research National Institute who hired some questionable PR guys who created national campaigns for the Tobacco companies on board. They convinced the nation that fluoride was medically safe and met their approval. It was an answer the government needed to hear. It was more or less, some feel, propaganda. It suited big corporate companies and politicians for a much-needed fix to the abundant fluoride supply. By 1950 it was a huge success but at the same time, some scientists were finding fluoride sensitivity symptoms like headache and gastric problems associated with test subjects. There was a lot of money made by supplying municipal water treatment plants here and around the world with the naturally found chemical that was virtually a by-product of the new metal, aluminum. It was being used in every industry. Some test results that were in print went unnoticed by the general public. Safe at lower levels, it accumulates in nature and also accumulates in the human body. It can be toxic in larger amounts that were and still are unknown. You may also be exposed to higher levels of fluoride if you work in industries where fluoride-containing substances are used. Most notably in the electronics industry where hydrogen fluoride may be used to etch glass in TV picture tubes or to clean silicon chips, along with aluminum and phosphate fertilizer plants. Toothpaste and dental rinses are the biggest fear especially for children swallowing toothpaste. Most fluoride leaves the body quickly in urine but some are stored in bone and teeth. They have determined that 4 milligrams per liter or above of fluoride in drinking water are unsafe but said it was coming from the infiltration of outside sources into the system. Children that live in those communities where they are exposed to those levels could be in danger of a condition called fluorosis and long-term use over a lifetime could cause bone fractures. Paul Gosar Flouride Drinking Water Conspiracy Theory IN 2001, Congressman Paul Gosar was a local dentist who passionately led a campaign to put fluoride in the drinking water in the Arizona city of Flagstaff. Faced with fierce opposition, Gosar called anti-fluoride conspiracy theories “disturbing,” suggested they could harm children, and vowed to “flood” the City Council chambers with people who supported fluoridation. Surgery is time-consuming, expensive, and painful,” the newspaper reported. Gosar said very young children with such problems are often anesthetized, which presents even more dangers.”Gosar, who supported efforts to put fluoride in Flagstaff’s water since as early as 1997, was ultimately defeated in his push.
