What is a Kayak Outrigger Kit

The outriggers will provide boaters with a high level of stability while boaters are out boating. These stabilizers are ideal for boaters who are always out fishing at lakes or oceans, adding stability while standing on the boat. What is a Kayak Outrigger Kit?

Kayak Outriggers Kit consists of:

Aluminum frame to minimize weight
One or more lateral support PVC inflatable/non-inflatable floats fastened to one or both sides of the main hull
Hinges for adjustment of height
Stainless steel or PVC mounting hardware
Built-in rod holders where floats are attached

It is an added advantage if you have an adjustable stabilizer outrigger for your Kayak so check if it features a hinge system for lowering the floats to a preferable level because most PVC floats have this feature, unlike the inflatable float models.

What is a Kayak Outrigger Kit

An Outrigger is a projecting structure mounted across a boat, with a specific size depending on the type of vessel. Outriggers can come with or be added to a canoe or kayak for better control, especially when fishing.

The general option for stability for vessels such as fins or even extra pontoons is to provide some stability. These devices, although effective, merely address the standard rocking motion of a small water vessel like a kayak or canoe.

Kayak and Canoe Outriggers offer an added level of stability and security to paddlers, they help balance your watercraft and lower the likelihood of it tipping over.

No surprise here since that’s why they were originally developed to add stability to the vessel. The outriggers are usually between 30 and 36 inches long. They’re usually placed about three-quarters of the way toward the stern and about two-thirds of an inch wide.

Outrigger stabilizers and risers are made from Carbon-fiber and polyethylene plastic and are lightweight aluminum, fiberglass, or plastic inflatable materials. It’s important to understand whether the materials are resistant to corrosion if you plan to use them in saltwater conditions.

Kayak Outriggers: 5 Reasons to Use Them | Canoe stabilizer, Kayak outriggers, Kayaking

Canoe and Kayak Outriggers

Kayak Outriggers are stabilizers that keep you steady when fishing so you can concentrate on your casting, changing, and tying lures or reeling in a fish. You won’t be focused on balancing your kayak or canoe. That means an unexpected bump or a movement in position might send your gear flying off the side of the boat or, worse, turn your vessel over.

A Kayak outrigger is used to add stability to your sit-on-top kayak and is a great accessory when using your kayak for fishing. Kayak Stabilizer floats allow you to stand up to cast and land your catch and also add safety when using a trolling motor.

Even if you have a fishing kayak that’s designed for standing, you still run the risk of losing everything your gear fishing equipment if you are not careful.

People with disabilities who find it hard to operate a kayak or canoe because of the difficulty in steadying these simple watercraft will find it beneficial.

The further the floats extend out on each side of the kayak, the more balance they deliver, giving paddlers an absolute added level of assurance that everyone can remain safe. Outriggers also make entering and exiting the kayak a steadier, more positive experience.

Outriggers are essentially extra hulls attached to your craft, and you’re either transferring it to a catamaran or a trimaran when you add them on. When you do add them to the kayak, you need to know that the shorter they are, the slower you’ll be. In almost every case, you’ll be slower than you were in your kayak alone.

Kayak Stabilizer System

Kayak float stabilizer packages are the safety and comfort you are looking for while on the water. Made from durable, lightweight Polyethylene plastic, these floats are designed to be easy to use, universal, and keep your canoe stable and upright.

Keep in mind before you start installing your kit that the installation process of a kayak outrigger is specific to the specific model; there are various matching.

Kayak Outrigger Kits consist of:

One or more lateral support floats fastened to one or both sides of the main hull.
The rear of your kayak likely consists of built-in rod holders, where the double floats are attached.
Hinges for adjustment of their height.
aluminum frames to minimize the weight impact on the kayak.
PVC material is used in the manufacture of floats.

Most expert paddlers suggest you should install a kayak outrigger at the stern end of the boat. It must be between 2/3 and 3/4 of the length of the boat as weighed from the bow. The specific area is also fixed by where there is a perfect place to add it.

Mounting your outrigger near the stern will keep the outrigger from getting in the way of the paddle stroke or tangling with a fishing line which could be a problem.

Either way, you need to mount it at the bow or stern of the kayak. The easier way to explain how to mount the Stabilizer Kit is to show you.

DIY Kayak Outriggers Kit

You can save yourself a few hundred dollars by creating your own Kayak Outrigger Stabilizer system that can be pretty close to the kits that you purchase

You just need a few pieces you may have to lie around your garage, like electrical conduit or PVC piping glue and some PVC fitting and clamps, and what really works well and looks good, too, is a Boat Bumper that you can buy online from Amazon or West Marine for about 12 bucks each in this video the whole job for under 50 bucks.

Lightweight Buoyancy should be the primary reason you are using a kayak stabilizer in the first place. You want to make sure you buy a unit with the most buoyancy.

You can use aluminum for the outrigger arms, making them a little longer than the arms on the Kayak float stabilizer from styrofoam or 1-gallon soda plastic bottles filled with expansion foam and covered with white plastic.

Only attach the pontoons to the kayak outrigger arms after installing the stabilizer arm on the kayak. Once you get going, you can make the project with rod holders and seat adjustments that would depend on you. Check out this video!
